Intro
Hello Beautiful! Welcome or welcome back to my blog, my name is Sarah Yinka. Today will be talking all about how to create your dream wardrobe for any season without spending an arm and a leg.
Listen, I know the feeling of staring at your closet and feeling like you have nothing to wear or nothing fits the kind of vibe that you’re going for.
When you start to feel like that more often with your clothes it might be a sign that you are ready for a revamp and rebrand.
As humans, we evolve pretty often depending on what stage we are in our lives at most times that affects our fashion choices as well.
So I will be showing and sharing tips on how to build your dream closet for any season to fit any aesthetic so if you’re ready let’s begin…..
1 – Declutter and Discover
First things first, you need to declutter our current closet. This step is so important because we need to know what “essential clothes” that we have to begin with.
Essential clothes (also known as basics) are clothes that will never go out of trend. They can work with any outfit and can be styled in multiple different ways and are usually in neutral colors.
Then we can look at what “staple clothes” you have that you like and will fit the look you’re going for.
When doing this, try to be very vigilant with yourself. The rule of thumb is that if you haven’t wore it in six months and you don’t see yourself wearing it in the next six months it needs to go. Point…Blank…Period.
No more keeping clothes that you bought for that one occasion and never wore again or clothes that you say “I’ll wear once I hit a certain size” Let it go and give away.
After you’re done decluttering your closet, you will know what foundation you are working with which will help you in building off that when it comes to shopping.
So dedicate some time to take everything out and declare.
2 – Figure out what look you are going for
After you’re done with the decluttering process, the next step is to figure out what vibe you are going for with your wardrobe.
This might vary depending on what stage you are at in your life or what season it is or where you live.
These can all be factors in deciding the kind of vibe that you want to go for.
The biggest piece of advice that I can give you to help with this step is to use Pinterest for inspiration.
The way Pinterest works is it shows you more pictures based on what you like.
The devil works hard but Pinterest’s algorithm works harder
The best way to utilize this is to go on the website and make an account.
Then create 3-5 boards for different categories of your life.
For example:
- University outfit ideas
- Work outfit ideas
- Going out outfit ideas
- Errands outfit ideas
Then anytime you like a certain outfit for a certain occasion, you’ll pin it to your board and Pinterest will start to show you more outfits that look like that.
This makes it a lot easier for you to understand the type of outfits that you want to buy.
When it comes to choosing an aesthetic, just a reminder that you can be whatever and how many aesthetics you want to be but I always say that there is a primary and secondary styles.
When I say this, I mean there will always be a main style that you gravitate to more. For example, you might love the “preppy girl” aesthetic (primary) but you also like the “casual aesthetic” which would be your secondary style.
Example of preppy (primary) and casual (secondary) in an outfit
So, you would use your primary style as your main base for choosing an outfit but to add your own touch you would add your secondary style. this is in my opinion the best way to figure out the type of clothes that fit you best.
if you’re not sure, again you can use Pinterest or after you’ve decluttered your closet you can see what type of style of clothes are more consistent than others. then you’ll get an idea of what kind of vibe you like the most.
3- Shop with practicality.
Now that you figured out what kind of vibe you like, here comes the fun part… shopping!
To reduce impulse or careless shopping, 80% of your closet should be essential clothes. Then the rest can be more staples pieces.
This is so important because if you have more staples than basics in your closet, you will start to find it hard to create outfits because you will be limited in the way you can style your staple pieces so stock up on basics.
When it comes to shopping with basics and choosing the right ones, you want to shop for basics that are in neutral colors like black, white, nude, or brown.
Then, you need to be able to style it in multiple different ways with multiple different outfits.
Finally, you want to make sure that it’s wearable and convenient. For example, buying a good quality black basic jumper for winter or buying a nude halter top for summer.
Those two items can be styled in many ways and can be worn for two different types of seasons.
So, when you’re buying essential clothes, ask yourself “Is this practical? and how many ways can I style this?”
Then you can decide whether it’s worth purchasing or not.
Stores that have great basics are:
How to add staple pieces to your dream wardrobe
The next step would be to incorporate staples, knowing what are the best staple pieces to buy for your closet that will go with other outfits can be a little confusing.
For me, I like to look at the item and see if I can incorporate it into two or three different outfits or I’ll ask myself will I wear this again?
obviously, if you’re buying a certain dress for a certain occasion. for example, Christmas and you might not wanna wear it again and that’s okay.
But if you want a nice staple piece that you can wear multiple times it’s really important that you are sure that you can style it in different ways.
If you ever like a certain staple piece and you don’t know if you can style it in other ways, maybe try going on TikTok or Pinterest and searching up that specific item and seeing how other people style it. For example, if it’s a certain mini skirt then you could go on Pinterest and search up “mini skirt outfit summer” and see how other people style it. That way it will help you give an idea on how to style it in different ways.
4- Accessories are your bestie.
I know we are focusing on clothes in this post, but I did want to make a section dedicated to accessories. if you read any other of my blog posts then you’ll know I am a big advocate for accessories because I believe accessories can make or break your look and that would go along with building your dream wardrobe.
In my opinion, I think it is so important to have a good selection of jewelry that you can run to for adding your little spice to your look.
It might be a signature necklace that you always wear or a ring that you love, all these things add to the look so don’t neglect them when it comes to building your perfect closet.

It might not take you overnight to nail your exact signature look but that’s the fun part. It’s a trial-and-error process.
